Le projet d'extension de la plus grande mine de Lithium hard rock du monde près de démarrer à Greebushes en Australie. Projet à 360 millions de dollars.

World’s largest hard rock lithium mine to get bigger

May 11, 2019

Talison Lithium, a partnership between China’s Tianqi and U.S. group Albemarle, secured approval this week from the Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) to expand the Greenbushes lithium mine in the southwest of the state.

The decision came with a series of conditions, including the protection of the threatened black cockatoos, which are unique to Australia’s south-west region.

Already the world's largest hard rock lithium operation, the planned expansion would allow Greenbushes to increase lithium concentrate output to about 1.95 million tonnes a year, as demand for the key ingredient to build batteries that power electric picks up.

The A$516-million ($361m) expansion, announced last year, involves the construction of a new lithium concentrate plant capable of producing 520,000 tonnes a year of chemical-grade lithium concentrate. It also entails a new crushing plant and the necessary infrastructure.

If it receives the nod from Western Australia's environment minister, the last one needed, construction will start this year, with the new plant expected to be commissioned in the last quarter of 2020.

Albemarle, which holds a 49% stake in Talison, is planning a lithium hydroxide manufacturing plant, outside of Bunbury, capable of producing up to 100,000 tonnes per year of lithium hydroxide monohydrate from five 20,000 tonnes per year process trains and up to 1.1-million tonnes a year of tailings.

China’s Tianqi, which has a 51% interest in Talison, is constructing a 24 000 t/y lithium hydroxide plant in Kwinana, just 40 km from Perth.

Lithium carbonate prices have been drifting lower from the highs hit in 2017, but remain around the $10,000 to $11,000 level per tonne according to Fastmarkets MB, almost double the $6,450 per tonne at the beginning of 2015.

Authier Lithium Project (open pit)

Authier lithium project is hard rock spodumene lithium open-cut mine located near Val d’Or, Quebec, Canada.

Sayona Mining owns the lithium project and is developing it with an estimated investment of C$89.9m (65.8$m). Sayona acquired the project from Glen Eagle Resources in July 2016.

The project is anticipated to produce an average of approximately 115,000 tons (t) of spodumene a year, through its estimated mine life of 18 years.

Definitive feasibility study of the project was completed in September 2018, while construction is scheduled to be commenced in late-2019. Commercial operations are expected to be started in mid-2020.

Image

Authier lithium project is anticipated to create up to 160 jobs in the construction and operational phase.

Authier lithium project geology and mineralization
Authier lithium project is located approximately 45km north-west of the city of Val d’Or, one of the prominent mining service centers in Quebec. The deposit is approximately 825m-long and has an average thickness of 25m.

The lithium mineralization at Authier is located in a spodumene-bearing pegmatite intrusion.

Authier lithium project reserves
As of September 2018, the proven and probable mineral reserves of the Authier lithium project are estimated to be 12.01 million tons (Mt) grading 1.0% lithium oxide (Li2O). The project is estimated to contain 121, 590t of Li2O.

Mining at Sayona Mining’s Authier project
Sayona Mining proposes to employ conventional open-pit mining method at the Authier lithium project. Hydraulic excavators and dump trucks will deliver the mined ore to the primary crusher or to the stockpile.

Major mining fleet of the project will comprise 60 metric ton rigid body dump trucks, two hydraulic excavators, a front-end loader, and two down-the-hole drill rigs.

Ore processing
The project also includes a pilot plant, which was successfully completed by SGS Canada in May 2018.

Run-of-mine (ROM) ore will be transported from the pit to the crushing plant, where it will undergo three-stage crushing. The crushed ore will be conveyed to a ball mill in closed-circuit with hydrocyclones and grinded to obtain a P80 size of 180µm.

Iron-bearing silicate minerals will be removed from the ground ore in a magnetic separation circuit, de-slimed, and forwarded to mica flotation unit. The resultant slurry will be sent to an attrition scrubber and hydrocyclones for second-stage de-sliming before being conveyed to spodumene flotation circuit.

The spodumene concentrate will be filtered to 6% moisture and stockpiled in a covered storage area before being shipped to the port of Montreal.

The plant is expected to produce 87,400t of 6% Li2O concentrate, on an average, suitable for sale to lithium carbonate conversion plants that supply feedstock to lithium battery manufacturers.

Off-take of lithium from Authier lithium project
Sayona Mining signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Huan Changyuan, a subsidiary of Minmetals Group, for the sale of spodumene concentrate produced at Authier, in November 2017.

Huan Changyuan is entitled to purchase up to 100,000t of spodumene concentrate a year, as part of the agreement.

Infrastructure
The lithium project is located near Val d’Or and Amos cities and can be accessed through the national highway and a nearby rural road.

Power required by the mine will be sourced from the nearby electricity grid located approximately 5km east of the mine site.

Grosse découverte de Lithium dans le Sud Ouest de la Chine.

Estimated 5 million tonnes of lithium deposits found in southwest China

June 4, 2019

An estimated 5 million tonnes of lithium deposits have been found in China's southwestern province of Yunnan, scientists said, potentially curbing the nation's reliance on imports of the material, used in electric vehicle batteries.

The Institute of Geochemistry, under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said in a statement on its website on Monday that it had made the discovery. State media such as the China Daily newspaper reported the find on Wednesday.

Demand for lithium is growing rapidly as some consumers shift away from cars powered by fossil fuels.

The institute estimated that roughly 340,000 tonnes of lithium oxide were deposited in a test site of 7.2 square km, indicating the amount of lithium oxide in the entire area could exceed 5 million tonnes.

"With society's expectations of longer lasting battery power for portable devices and the increase in electric vehicles, the demand for lithium has increased sharply," the China Daily quoted Wen Hanjie, a researcher involved in the discovery, as saying.

"But we also see a high dependence on lithium imports as about 80 percent of lithium used in China between 2011 and 2015 was from overseas … To find our own lithium resources is an urgent need."

The Chinese government has previously expressed concern about its overseas dependence for materials such as lithium, which it sees as key to the development of strategic emerging industries such as rechargeable battery production.

The world's largest reserves of lithium can be found in countries including Bolivia, whose Uyani salt flats has at least 21 million tonnes of lithium.

Du Lithium en Finlande
J'avais raté ça l' an dernier. Un projet assez avancé.
255 millions d'euro de Capex.

DFS opens door for Keliber to advance Finland lithium project

15th June 2018

Exploration and development firm Keliber has published the results of a definitive feasibility study (DFS) for its lithium project, in Finland, confirming its financial and technical feasibility.

The DFS endows the lithium project with a net present value, using an 8% discount, of €295-million, a pretax internal rate of return of 24% and a payback period of 5.5 years.

The study establishes a capital expenditure estimate of €255-million for the mine, concentrator and chemical plant.

Keliber will use the DFS to qualify the lithium project for construction financing. The company reports that it is progressing negotiations for a combination of debt and equity funding for the project.

The DFS estimates that the project has potential to generate total life of operations revenue of €2.28-billion and operating cash flow €1.21-billion.

Based on current ore reserves, the life-of-mine is 13 years. The project is extended to 20 years by purchasing spodumene concentrates from third parties for seven years after the mine is exhausted.

"The successful completion of the DFS is a crucial milestone and will form a strong base for the company to become the first vertically integrated European lithium producer located near the fast-developing European lithium markets.

“The market for lithium products is extremely strong and demand is forecast to grow rapidly throughout the next decade. At the beginning of the 2030s, lithium consumption is estimated to be seven times higher than current consumption,” says Keliber Oy CEO Pertti Lamberg.

Keliber’s flowsheet selection for the project is a conventional spodumene concentrator, conversion of alpha to beta spodumene in a rotary kiln and a soda pressure leach process to produce lithium carbonate.

The 600 000 t/y concentrator plant will be located in Kalavesi Kaustinen and the chemical plant for lithium carbonate production will be in Kokkola Industrial Park and will produce 11 000 t/y.

The soda pressure leaching process for the lithium carbonate production enables production of battery grade (over 99.5%) lithium carbonate.

The lithium carbonate production process will deliver two by-products, analcime sand and quartz-feldspar sand, which could potentially have a commercial value.

The clean-tech soda pressure leaching process is planned and designed in close cooperation with Outotec.

“Our planned investment is one of the biggest investments in Central Ostrobothnia for decades. Our future production will directly employ about 140 people, with the multiplier effect on employment being even greater,” says chief production officer
